Social networking gets soy-inked
Odd thing about Myspace’s new eco-book, “MySpace/OurPlanet: Change Is Possible”: It kicks off with Myspace president Tom Anderson basically declaring the supremacy of the printed word over the web: “I wouldn’t be doing this unless I thought it was for something so unbelievably important that it had to be in print,” Anderson writes in his foreword. Will insurance cover MySpace parties?
Clauses in most home cover policies mean that damage to the possessions and your property may not be covered. And many insurers will refuse to pay out if you or your child have acted irresponsibly. This includes allowing in gatecrashers, advertising your party on the internet through social networking sites such as MySpace or Facebook, and even inviting more guests than could reasonably fit into your home. Girl bloggers rise in numbers
Kylie Robertson first began blogging at 13, about the time she felt some complicated new emotions emerging. By her mid-teens, she was routinely spilling her feelings online, using her Internet journal as her sounding board. Mostly, she vented about whatever was ticking her off at the time. “I thought that starting something like a blog could help me - I could go back and read what I was feeling at that time, and it would help me to sort things out,” she says. Robertson, now 19, isn’t alone. While teens as a whole rule the blogosphere - 28 per cent of Internet-using teenagers blog compared with only eight per cent of adults - girls of all ages dominate, according to a recent survey by the Pew Internet & American Life Project. Prosecuter teaches lessons from MySpace pages
During her senior year at McCutcheon High School, Tiffany Morris set up a MySpace account to keep in touch with family and friends who don’t live nearby. But unlike some of her peers — and countless others who use the popular social networking Web site — she chose to take extra steps to protect her privacy online. “You need to know my e-mail address before I’ll approve you,” said Morris, 19, now a freshman at Ivy Tech Community College. “I’ve gone through my friends’ MySpace lists and asked, ‘Who’s this person?’ They don’t even know. In Your Face With Myspace
If eyes are the window to the soul, Facebook is a contorted mirror, the final nail in the voyeuristic coffin.” A cyber-cynic friend came up with this gem last week as we embarked on our umpteenth Facebook debate. She was being virtually super-poked by a callous ex-boyfriend for the second time in as many days; I was lamenting being in the virtual doghouse for not having paid enough ‘cyber-attention’ to a friend whose online status had declared she was having a bad day.
